Spring-Summer Health & Safety Checklist

As the school year wraps up and summer brings new priorities, staying on top of health and safety requirements can still be a challenge. This checklist is designed to make it easier—offering a clear framework to help you schedule, track, and complete key tasks during this transition and into the months ahead. The suggested timing serves as a guide, giving your district the flexibility to adjust based on your needs. And remember, you don’t have to manage it alone—Resource Training & Solutions’ Health & Safety team is here to partner with you, providing expert guidance and support to help keep your schools safe, compliant, and ready for the next school year.

April

  • Asbestos conduct surveillance (due July 9)
  • Test Fume Hood for velocity and post fume hood results on hood (every 6 months)
  • Tornado Awareness Month
  • Lead in Water flushing scheduled and records maintained if applicable
    • Test results reviewed and actions taken if applicable

May

  • OSHA 300 Log may be taken down from each site (retain 5 years)
  • Indoor Air Quality (“IAQ”) Program Review
  • Personal Protective Equipment program review
    • Survey Facilities for PPE use, needs, storage and type

June

  • Custodial/Custodial Maintenance Training
    • Complete annual safety training to affected staff on required topics
  • Fire Drills – Summer Programs including Childcare Programs – require a minimum of two additional fire drills during summer session.

July

  • Asbestos six-month asbestos surveillance due.
  • Asbestos Annual Notification Distributed to Parents/Guardians/Staff at every school building. (includes those with no asbestos)
  • OPTIONAL Indoor Air Quality Annual Notification Distributed to Parents/Guardians/Staff
  • Integrated Pest Management Annual Notification Distributed to Parents/Guardians/Staff
  • All ten-year plan documentation is to be approved by the school board prior to submitting to MDE for commissioner approval. Submit board approved ten-year plans to mde.facilities@state.mn.us by July 31.
  • Test Fume Hood for velocity and post fume hood results on hood (every 6 months)

August

  • Schedule repairs for any damaged asbestos that was noted in your AHERA re-inspection
  • Schedule your Annual Management Assistance Safety Inspection.
    • Survey Facilities for Potential OSHA Violations
  • AWAIR Training for New Staff – emphasis on safety committee
  • BBP Training for New Staff (within 10 days of employment) and Refresher Training for Affected Employees
  • Offer and document Hepatitis B Vaccinations
  • Employee Right-to-Know Training for New Staff and Refresher Training for Affected Employees – Document all training. Verify training & chemical labeling up to OSHA’s new Globally Harmonized System standards.
  • Asbestos Awareness 2- Hour Training for Custodial Maintenance Staff -if applicable.
  • Additionally, new staff hires must also be offered a free titer validation. (healthcare/1st responders)
