Beginning with the 2026–2027 school year, Minnesota statute 121A.241 requires every school district and charter school to have a Cardiac Emergency Response Plan (CERP) in place. This is more than a compliance item—it’s about ensuring your staff, students, and community are prepared to act quickly and confidently in a life-threatening situation.
A strong CERP provides a clear, coordinated approach to responding to cardiac emergencies wherever they may occur—inside the classroom, during after-school activities, or at athletic events on or off school grounds.
To meet the requirements and build an effective plan, schools should:
- Establish a Cardiac Emergency Response Team in each building
- Identify and map all AED (Automated External Defibrillator) locations across school facilities and grounds
- Provide annual training and certification aligned to staff roles
- Conduct yearly cardiac emergency response drills involving staff and students
- Ensure routine inspection and maintenance of AED equipment
- Include clear protocols for responding to emergencies at school-sponsored events, both on and off campus
Additionally, plans must be reviewed annually by the school board to ensure they remain effective and up to date.
This work can feel complex—but you don’t have to navigate it alone.
Our Health & Safety team is here to help. From developing or refining your CERP to coordinating training, mapping AEDs, and supporting compliance efforts, we partner with your team to build a plan that works in real-world situations—not just on paper.
When it comes to cardiac emergencies, preparation saves lives. Make sure your school is ready.
