Spark 2026: Inspiring Exploration Through STEM

On Thursday, January 8, 2026, the WICK Science Building at St. Cloud State University was filled with excitement as 282 students from eight member districts came together for the annual Spark STEM Conference. Hosted by Resource Training & Solutions, the event offered a full day of hands-on learning, exploration, and connection with real-world STEM applications.

One educator who attended as a chaperone summed up the experience best:

“Spark does such a great job of meeting students where they’re at. The hands-on sessions kept them engaged all day, and many left talking about careers and ideas they hadn’t considered before.”

This enthusiasm captures the essence of Spark STEM—an event designed to engage young minds, nurture curiosity, and inspire a lasting interest in science, technology, engineering, and math.

A Tradition of Inspiring Young Scientists

Now in its 19th year, the Spark STEM Conference continues to connect students across central Minnesota with meaningful STEM experiences. By bringing learning into a university setting, Spark helps students envision future pathways while building confidence through exploration and discovery.

Learning Through Hands-On Experiences

This year’s conference featured a variety of interactive sessions designed to immerse students in real-world STEM applications. Highlights included experimenting with dry ice and liquid nitrogen during a cryogenics session led by Jeff Payne from 3M Visiting Wizards, tackling real-world design challenges through packaging engineering with Medtronic, programming VEX IQ robots during a coding session led by SCTCC STEAM Outreach & VEX Robotics, and exploring physics through the mesmerizing motion of a pendulum snake demonstration.

Reflecting on the day, Alison Orgaard, CTE Manager at Resource Training & Solutions, shared:

“Spark is always a highlight of our year. Watching students actively engage, ask thoughtful questions, and connect what they’re learning to real-world applications reinforces why this conference continues to be so impactful.”

A Heartfelt Thank You

Resource Training & Solutions extends sincere thanks to the presenters, volunteers, and educators who made Spark 2026 possible. Your time, expertise, and enthusiasm helped create an engaging and memorable experience for all participants.
